What fun country living is. I heard some commotion last evening as Fred was walking from the living room toward the kitchen. “There’s a snake in here!” he shouted, and I came running.
Yup, about as big around as a pencil and probably 10 to 12 inches long but moving pretty fast so I couldn’t quickly identify it. We tried the broom and the cup routine and little snake was having none of that. So plan “B” it was.
I see them do this all the time on TV, I grabbed for it’s head. Well, my aim is terrible and I had the middle of the snake and it was curling up my finger and hand. Fred assured me it probably was not poisonous. I got outside and could see the markings. It was a little oak snake. It is now loose by the pond just off our front deck. I’ll probably see it again when it it much bigger and trying to get into a bird nest or the chicken coop. Then I’ll wonder why I saved its life.
The irony of all this is there is comic strip called Zits in our local paper. This week they are dealing with Mom finding a snake in the garage. Dad and teenage son are coming to the rescue with a broom and a bucket. Can’t wait to see how it turns out. I’m sorry we didn’t have a camera handy so no photos of little snake.
Now you know, they eat roaches and rodents so we don’t kill snakes at our place. I wonder if they like bats?
