Preparing and Cooking Chicken 101

…or how Grandma used to do it.

Now, my Grandma whacked the head off with a hatchet on a tree stump, but we won’t start there!

I’m talking to Rick Harter of Heavenly Homestead and Louise Hill of Turkey Hill Farm about putting together a cooking class that compares the differences between store-bought chicken and fresh. Rick will bring nice specimens from his farm.  I have one from “the grocery store” we can use for comparison. We would hold the class at Johnston’s Meat Market. There is plenty of parking and seating for us in a nice, country home atmosphere. The tentative date is Saturday, May 28, 2011 but we haven’t settled on a time or fee just yet. We will finish by eating what we prepare and there will be some hands on for those that want to be that involved.

Rick and Amy Harter have had a plan like this for years but not had the chance to develop it. They are busy with a young family. They have  worked hard developing a natural farm setting to provide a healthy environment for their children both body and soul.  Louise has a “grocery list” of items about things that  many of us from other generations took for granted. You know, those things  that Mom or Grandma did everyday and taught us. Now with technology providing us with so much, we’ve fast forwarded our own environment and forgotten or never experienced some simple things.  And that’s our goal, let’s learn to cut up a chicken, some simple recipes, enjoy conversation and learn something in the process.

If you like this idea, show Rick and Louise some encouragement by posting a comment in the blog.  We’d like to know the time of day that would work best for you.
