During last few weeks I have spent most of my time putting together a group of local farmers and artist to participate in the Watermelon Festival. This is an annual event that brings thousands to Monticello and which is sometimes described by visitors as “just like Mayberry” meant, of course, in a good way.
The 2011 Festival was this last Saturday and I it was a great event. We had handmade soap, woodcarvers, vegetables, fruit, jelly, plants, garden gloves, books and jewelry and all were well received. The event is sponsored by the Jefferson/Monticello Chamber of Commerce and the vendors are coordinated by Main Street Monticello, a branch of the Chamber which I recently joined.
Main Street Monticello is working hard to have our very own downtown farmers market! It will be on Saturday mornings at the Old Jail House right here in Monticello which is just 1 block off US 90 and about in the center of town. Keep an eye out for where we are going with this.
