Most of you that have been customers know that we are dedicated to growing our own product and we have been working for over a year to increase our breeding stock. Breeding age is eight months to a year, then five months to lambing, and then six to eight more months before the product is ready. That’s close to two years of toil for us, and the ewe, before we see any results.
We hope to have access to 100 breeding ewes in the next couple of years. We are half way there. This take lots of space to stay natural. In our case, we have a couple of “sister/brother” farms that help with providing pasture. We get rid of the kudzu for them.
On one farm, we provide the ram and they provide us with the lambs. They have all the fun of seeing the babies hop and play but don’t have to keep a mean ram around all the time. There’s another farm, owned by a friend that lives close by and who knows the value of animals that are grass fed with no chemicals around. All the lamb guys end up on our property as they are weaned and they are completely finished under our supervision.
However, the majority are born right here at Golden Acres Ranch. We also have the added advantage of year round lambing here in the south. This year lambs were born in February and March and now in June. The next lambing should be between September and November….and the cycle is set to go on and on.
